Earlier this month, the FDA took the ground-breaking step of
recommending approval for a drug derived from cannabis. The drug is called is Epidiolex and it contains cannabidiol, or CBD. This drug treats two very specific kinds of epilepsy called lled Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
You might think this sounds like a step in the right direction toward getting CBD oil approved for more widespread use. But don't count on it. In fact, there's a good chance that this drug approval means natural health companies will be banned from selling CBD oil.
Benefits of CBD
CBD is a natural component found in hemp. It comes from the same plant as marijuana but does not contain the psychoactive compound THC which is responsible for producing a high. CBD, along with other other non-psychoactive phytocannabinoids, has garnered significant acclaim for its health value.
Like other cannabinoids,
CBD attaches itself to certain receptors in the body called CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors. CBD's effect on the body includes natural pain relief, anti-inflammatory properties, and treatment for epilepsy and anxiety disorders. There's also research into using CBD to treat Alzheimer's, Type 1 diabetes, and cancer. And promising evidence indicates it can help people quit smoking and get through drug withdrawals.
Restrictions On CBD
Because marijuana and other hemp derivatives are classified as a schedule I drug by the DEA, research on CDB oil is heavily regulated. It is, however, available for purchase in states that approve medical marijuana. And because CBD is not psychoactive, certain states that do not approve marijuana still allow sale and purchase of CBD oil. But there's a danger of that changing.
Texas is already
poised to ban CBD oil within the state. The Texas Department of State Health Services is considering a proposal which would ban all products containing CBD oil. It's a proposal that the Texas Cannabis Industry Association describes as “another blow to Texans that rely on natural remedies."
The Danger of FDA Approval
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the FDA's approval of a drug containing CBD will loosen any of the restrictions on CBD oil. In fact, there's a good chance it will make things worse. Pharmaceutical companies don't want to share their profits with those of us who sell natural health products. And if you can only get CBD oil as an ingredient in prescription drugs they won't have to.
