A Closer Look at Hydration and Why It's Vital

What are Electrolytes? The Cellular Significance of Hydration

Water is vital for life, but to maintain proper bodily functions, we also need electrolytes. Every cell in the human body relies on proper hydration.

When we sweat or lose fluids, we lose both water and electrolytes. Simply replacing lost fluids with just water can dilute the amount of electrolytes in the blood.

Electrolytes are minerals that conduct electricity when dissolved in water… which, distributed through the fluid in your body, use their electrical energy to facilitate important bodily functions like:

  • Maintaining fluid balance.
  • Regulating blood pressure.
  • Generating energy.
  • Helping muscles contract.
  • Maintaining the correct acidity of the blood

Common electrolytes our bodies need to function include sodium (Na+), chloride (Cl+), potassium (K+), magnesium (Mg2+) and calcium (Ca2+).

Chronic Dehydration and Its Impacts

While acute dehydration can have immediate and visible effects, chronic dehydration operates insidiously. It may present as frequent fatigue, skin issues, or even cognitive delays.

Chronic dehydration can affect everyone, and not just those who are physically active. Even those who don't engage in rigorous exercise may experience dehydration due to:

  • Insufficient fluid intake,
  • Ignoring thirst due to feeling too busy,
  • Excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption,
  • Hot or humid weather,
  • Illness,
  • Medications with diuretic effects,
  • High protein diets,
  • Low food intake,
  • or certain medical conditions resulting in increased salt loss in sweat.

Over time, inadequately hydrated cells can disrupt metabolic processes, leading to more severe health issues like kidney stones and urinary tract infections.

The Demand for Enhanced Hydration Products

The modern lifestyle, with its fast-paced demands, has led many to seek enhanced hydration solutions.

Factors like intense workouts, frequent travel, or even prolonged exposure to air-conditioned environments can also increase one's hydration needs.

This demand has led to a surge in hydration products, with each claiming superiority.

But as with all things, quality varies, and understanding the difference in products is key.

Even products that market themselves as all ‘natural’ with only the things we need, and none of the things we don’t need, contain synthetic electrolytes / minerals and unnecessary additives.

In the next section, we’ll share a few red flags you can watch out for when choosing your electrolytes, why they are red flags, and what to look for instead.

Red Flags in Popular Hydration Products

No Information on Salt Quality

Salt isn't just a flavor enhancer - it's vital for cellular function. The quality of salt used in hydration products can determine the potency of their mineral - or electrolyte - content.

A red flag to watch out for in electrolyte powders is when the brand has little to no information on the source and quality of its number 1 ingredient - salt.

Cheaper salt may have sodium and chloride, but it misses out on electrolytes like Magnesium, Potassium, Calcium, and Sodium, resulting in inferior hydration benefits.

Aside from being devoid of essential trace minerals, inferior salts may be loaded with impurities like heavy metals and microplastics. Many of the salts available on the market are not rigorously tested for these impurities.

With salt being a predominant ingredient in hydration solutions, understanding its source and purity is crucial.

Crucial Four’s new electrolyte formulation, mHydrate, is packed with only the highest quality and most nutrient dense salt: Crucial Four’s mSalt and mMinerals.

mSalt is the most nutrient dense salt in the world sourced from Iceland, with 4x the amount of magnesium and 2x the amount of potassium as competitor brands. It is 100% geothermically produced, using zero carbon footprint during its production. mSalt is high in magnesium, potassium, calcium and sodium with an extremely high magnesium to calcium ratio. It is also quite rare with a limited supply per year, and you will get benefits from mSalt with mHydrate.

mMinerals is sourced from a deep salt water aquifer that runs from Antarctica to the coast of Africa. It passes through ancient seashell beds with increased magnesium, calcium and potassium… and rich in even more beneficial trace minerals! It is hand harvested in areas free of tourism and industry due to the treacherous current and freezing temperatures, resulting in a hyper pure salt.

Other brands claim that it is virtually impossible to attain a zero on heavy metals and microplastics, boasting about having ‘low microplastics.’

We don’t think this is good enough.

Considering the amount of heavy metals and microplastics we are already exposed to in our modern environment, it’s our duty to ensure that we eliminate any more unnecessary exposure through the products we provide.

That’s why we’ve gone through the extra effort to create a special filtration process that results in zero microplastics (tested and proven) and an industry low level of heavy metals (also tested and proven) for both mSalt and mMinerals.

Synthetic Minerals

Because most hydration brands have poor raw materials (cheap salt) with low natural electrolytes, many resort to adding synthetic minerals to increase electrolyte content - believing them to be a suitable substitute for natural ones.

However, there are nuanced differences in how our body absorbs and uses natural vs synthetic minerals.

Natural minerals are accompanied by other trace elements that enhance their absorption and function, an aspect missing in their synthetic counterparts.

TIP: If you want to find out if the vitamins and minerals on an ingredient list are natural and not synthetic, look out for whole foods that contain a certain nutrient in the ingredient list. For example, 'tart cherry powder' has natural Vitamin C. 'Vitamin C (from ascorbic acid)’ is synthetic.

mHydrate stands apart by ensuring that every ingredient is derived from natural sources, preserving the synergistic benefits inherent in nature.

We use real hydrating and organic tart cherry juice, lemon juice and coconut blossom nectar that not only taste delicious but are loaded with electrolytes and minerals. Our ingredients are proudly 100% functional, with each ingredient contributing electrolytes and nourishment.

  • mSalt and mMinerals:
    • See previous section for breakdown on why our salts are superior.
  • Organic Montmorency Tart Cherry Powder
    • We specifically chose the Montmorency Tart Cherry as a raw material for mHydrate because it is high in electrolytes like potassium, calcium and magnesium, as well as fiber, beta carotene, anti-oxidants, iron, vitamins A, C, B6, E and folic acid. Studies show that tart cherries are great for strengthening the immune system, reducing muscle soreness, and improving sleep - perfect for recovery after physical exertion.
  • Organic Lemon Juice Powder
    • Lemons are the queen of citrus when it comes to electrolytes, providing potassium, calcium and magnesium, as well as balancing pH levels and boosting the immune system with vitamin C.
  • Coconut Blossom Nectar
    • This natural sweetener is a rich source of electrolytes like potassium, and magnesium, as well as zinc, iron, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and Vitamin C.

And that’s it - no other ingredients!

That means every single ingredient within mHydrate functions to keep you nourished and hydrated.

You receive all the hydrating and taste benefits of these fruits in a powder form because of our special low temperature dehydration process designed to be gentle enough to keep the chlorophyll and rich enzymes intact, retaining the Enzymes, Flavonoids, Antioxidants, Proteins, volatile oils, and vibrant colors.

    Mysterious "Natural Flavors"

Another red flag to watch out for are 'Natural Flavors' or even ‘Organic Flavors’ in the ingredient list.

These are terms that've been stretched thin in its definition. While they suggest flavors derived from natural or organic sources, the journey from natural source to ‘Natural Flavors’ involves chemical processes altering its very essence.

For consumers, this ambiguity can lead to unwittingly ingesting additives they'd prefer to avoid.

‘Natural Flavors’ is the 4th most common ingredient found on ingredient lists.

Currently, the FDA does not require food labels to say what's in their 'natural flavor' unless the ingredients include a common allergen like milk, fish, egg, shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts or soy. For those who are allergic to less common allergens, the manufacturer must be directly contacted to see if that ingredient is a part of the flavor blend.

Regulators argue that we are consuming ‘natural flavors’ in such small amounts that it is not a huge cause for concern.

However, considering how common ‘Natural Flavors’ are - just because one isolated ingredient may be safe in small amounts, the combination of that one with hundreds others we are exposed to has not yet been studied. We may not understand the full effects of natural flavors until many years down the road.

It’s imperative to have clarity in labeling and a more stringent definition of what 'natural' means on the ingredient list.

mHydrate does not use ‘Natural Flavors.’

mHydrate does not use Citric Acid - a highly common and highly inflammatory ingredient - to create tartness.

    mHydrate’s flavors are simply natural

The Cherry Lemonade label on your package is actually made from real organic Montmorency tart cherry juice, real organic lemon juice, and real coconut blossom nectar that have been dehydrated through a special low-temp process designed to preserve not only aroma and flavor but also the real fruits’ nutrients… with no ‘Natural Flavors’ needed.
